Understanding skin aging

Aging is a natural process that starts around the age of 25-30 and evolves slowly over time. It is marked by the gradual slowing down of the body’s metabolism and affects all the systems and organs of the body, including the largest one, the skin. It should be noted that there are two types of factors that affect aging:

1

Intrinsic factors or chronological aging are the consequence of the passage of time, which affects all living organisms and depends on genetic and physiological factors. It can also include pathological factors

Extrinsic factors are factors related to environmental conditionsand the person’s lifestyle. Specific factors include sun exposure, smoking, diet, emotional stress, oxidative stress, pollution and toxic substances to which the skin is subjected to

UV radiation and aging

UV radiation is one important factor of extrinsic skin aging. When comparing the areas that are usually exposed to sunlight, such as the face, the neck, the forearms and back of the hands, to the areas that are generally covered, the damage caused by the sun can be apparent. In these areas, skin wrinkles, marks and various UV-induced skin lesions can develop. Resistance to UV aggression varies greatly depending on the phototype. People with light or fair skin tend to age more rapidly than people with dark or matte skin.

Food and aging

The quality and balance of a person’s diet are extremely important. An unbalanced diet cannot provide the necessary tools for tissue defense and regeneration. Hence, it is important to provide the body with vital foods such as water, trace elements, vitamins, proteins, fats rich in omega 3 and omega 6, slow-acting carbohydrates.

Smoking and aging

Smoking is yet another factor in aging, both through direct smoking and second-hand smoking. Cigarette smoke contains a lot of harmful chemicals emitted through the combustion of tobacco that alter the elastic fibers of the skin and increase the production of free radicals worsening oxidative stress. These chemicals are far worse than nicotine. They enter the bloodstream and act on the vascular level thinning out blood vessels and reducing the nutrition levels of all organs, including the skin. With a lack of nutrients, the skin’s defenses are reduced and the effects of skin aging start to appear. Moreover, the muscle movement related to cigarette smoking accelerates the formation of wrinkles around the lips and the heat generated from tobacco burning will damage the skin cells closest to it.

Emotional stress and aging

Emotional stress and lack of sleep are major energy consumers and reduce the body’s ability to regenerate and defend itself. They lead to increased production of free radicals and accelerate aging.

Oxidative stress and aging

Oxidative stress is one of the major causes of skin aging. This biological phenomenon is generally caused by free radicals which damage the structures of the cells (DNA, membranes, proteins…). Under normal circumstances, the body produces free radicals during the metabolism process but cells have a defense system to counteract their effect. With time, the cells’ defense mechanism starts to decrease and the aging process accelerates.

CONSEQUENCES OF SKIN AGING

There are several clinical signs of skin aging, most notably are:

1

Loss of radiance

Dryness

Certain parts of the skin age differently than others. The aging process of the face is not comparable to that of the rest of the body, because the skin of the face is subject to facial expressions and the laws of gravity, leading to sagging and appearance of expression lines. Moreover, as the skin ages, it becomes drier thus less supple due to a drop in sebum secretion leading to a decrease in the hydrolipidic film. Around that time, we start noticing an alteration in the color and the texture of the skin. It becomes thinner along with the appearance of pigmentary spots, wrinkles and fine lines.

In order to prevent or prolong the time before the appearance of these age-related skin characteristics, it is best to start a skincare regimen early on. Even after the onset of these physiological changes, certain steps can be taken to counteract their appearance and lessen their effect.

NOT ALL PEOPLE ARE ALIKE WHEN IT COMES TO AGING

Some skins are more affected than others. For example, thin, dry skin will wrinkle more easily than thick, oily skin. White skin will show signs of age quicker than black skin. It all comes down to genetics and the quality of life that will influence the skin’s ability to defend and regenerate itself, as previously mentioned. As a rule of thumb, young skin must always be protected from environmental factors that may weaken it (sun, pollution, free radicals, etc.). As such, using an anti-aging skin care product that maintains the skin’s suppleness as well as its radiance and tone from an early stage can help achieve that goal.

Limiting sun exposure, and applying systematic sun protection prior to that

Stopping or reducing smoking, eating a balanced diet, drinking sufficient water to moisturize the skin

Taking care of your emotional wellbeing, regulating stress, ensuring sufficient physical activity, leading a healthy lifestyle and creating the conditions for good sleep quality

THE MECHANISM OF ACTION OF ANTI-AGING TREATMENTS

Their objective is to upkeep and prolong the biological mechanisms that are responsible for preventing free radical formation by accelerating the epidermal renewal process, maintaining skin thickness, allowing for exchanges to take place between the dermis and the epidermis, holding the skin’s matrix.

Under normal conditions, the skin renews itself entirely every 28 days. As skin ages, it faces greater difficulty to rebuild itself, and needs specific care that will create the optimal conditions to help it regenerate. The greater the care received by the skin, the more capable it will be to fight against various aggressions, and the less likely for it to have blemishes.

Apart from the essential sun protection, several strategies can be undertaken to offer proper care for the skin, depending on age. The older the skin gets, the drier it becomes and the more it needs to be moisturized and nourished

WHICH ANTI-AGING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Beginning at 25 years of age, anti-aging skin care products help to slow down the aging of the face by filling in wrinkles and fine lines. In the long run, these treatments maintain firmness, volume and act against the sagging of the overall face. Regenerating skin care products are more active at night and treating mature skin should therefore focus on evening care.
During the day, the skin fights for survival and at night, it recovers and rebuilds itself! The better a skin is maintained and rebuilt, the better it will be able to fight against aggressions.
Some molecules can “fight” free radicals, either by entrapping them like vitamins C and E, or by strengthening the skin’s radical quenching systems such as Selenium, Zinc, Coenzyme Q10, superoxide dismutase. These molecules further limit the harmful influence of oxidative stress on skin cells, which is responsible for skin aging and can be of significant importance in skin rejuvenation.
